Debian trauert um Thiemo Seufer

Das Debian-Projekt verlor ein aktives Mitgleid seiner Gemeinschaft. Thiemo Seufer starb am 26. Dezember in einem tragischen Autounfall.

Thiemo war in vielfältiger Weise an Debian beteiligt.  Er war für mehrere Pakete zuständig und der Hauptverantwortliche der Portierung auf die MIPS-Architekturen.  Er war außerdem Mitglied des Kernel-Teams und des Debian-Installer-Teams.  Seine Beiträge reichten jedoch weit über das Debian-Projekt hinaus.  Er arbeitete auch am MIPS-Port des Linux-Kernels, der MIPS-Emulation von qemu und viel zu vielen kleineren Projekten, um sie hier vollständig aufzulisten.

Thiemos Arbeit, Hingabe, breites technisches Wissen und die Fähigkeit dies mit anderen zu teilen, werden sehr vermisst werden. Seine Arbeit wird nicht vergessen werden.  Die von ihm gesetzten hohen Standards werden schwer fortzusetzen sein.

Um seine Beiträge zu Debian zu ehren, hat das Debian-Projekt beschlossen, Thiemo seine kommende Version Debian GNU/Linux 5.0 "Lenny" zu widmen.

Der Trauergottesdienst für Thiemo wird am Montag den 5. Januar 2009 um 13:30 in der Dominikanerkirche in Bad Wimpfen stattfinden. Falls Sie Ihr Beileid ausdrücken möchten, senden Sie bitte eine E-Mail an ths-condolence@linutronix.de. Sie werden an Thiemos Familie weitergeleitet werden.

openSUSE 11.1 Released!

The openSUSE Project is proud to announce the release of openSUSE 11.1. The openSUSE 11.1 release includes more than 230 new features[1], improvements to YaST, major updates to GNOME, KDE, OpenOffice.org, and more freedom with a brand new license[2], Liberation fonts, and openJDK. This is also the first release built entirely in the openSUSE Build Service.

VirtualBox 2.1.0

today Sun released VirtualBox 2.1.0. The following major new features were{mosimage}
added:

 * Support for hardware virtualization (VT-x and AMD-V) on Mac OS X hosts
 * Support for 64-bit guests on 32-bit host operating systems (experimental;
   see user manual, chapter 1.6, 64-bit guests, page 16)
 * Added support for Intel Nehalem virtualization enhancements (EPT and
   VPID; see user manual, chapter 1.2, Software vs. hardware virtualization
   (VT-x and AMD-V), page 10))
 * Experimental 3D acceleration via OpenGL (see user manual, chapter 4.8,
   Hardware 3D acceleration (OpenGL), page 66)
 * Experimental LsiLogic and BusLogic SCSI controllers (see user manual,
   chapter 5.1, Hard disk controllers: IDE, SATA (AHCI), SCSI, page 70)
 * Full VMDK/VHD support including snapshots (see user manual, chapter 5.2,
   Disk image files (VDI, VMDK, VHD), page 72)
 * New NAT engine with significantly better performance, reliability and ICMP
   echo (ping) support (bugs #1046, #2438, #2223, #1247)
 * New Host Interface Networking implementations for Windows and Linux hosts
   with easier setup (replaces TUN/TAP on Linux and manual bridging on
   Windows)

Songbird und Xchat

Gestern habe ich mir mal den Songbird 1.0 näher an geschaut und getestet.
Ich muss sagen was die Geschwindigkeit angeht mit dem der Songbird Musikarchive mit mehr als 3000 Songs verwaltet und mit der Suchfunktion die entsprechenden Songs findet ist beeindruckend.

Lange Rede kurzer Sinn, ich gebe Songbird nun klar den Vorzug vor Amarok, das einzige was mir noch fehlte war ein Script mit dem ich via Xchat die Leute in den Channles wieder nerven konnte mit dem was ich gerade höre.

Also habe ich mir mal die ganzen Add-ons, die es zu Songbird gibt, näher angeschaut und dabei „LiveTweeter“[1] [2] gefunden.

This extension allow you to post what you are listening on Twitter, MSN/Windows Live Messenger, Pidgin, Mercury, IRC and more !

Diese Add-on biete die Möglichkeit den Titel des gerade gespielten Songs in einer Datei zu speichern.

Na und das reicht mir doch um mal eben ein passendes Script für Xcaht zu schreiben!

Development Release: openSUSE 11.1 RC 1 Now Available

The openSUSE Project is happy to announce that openSUSE 11.1 RC 1 is now available.
If all goes well, this will be the last testing release before the final 11.1 public release on December 18th.

This release includes a number of bugfixes and changes since 11.1 beta5, as well as a new license.

Call for Testing
================

We all want openSUSE 11.1 to be the best release yet, and we need your help to get there. This release is ready for widespread testing, and we’re encouraging everyone to download and work with the testing releases to find any critical bugs before release.

Please run the release through your usual routine, and let us know about any bugs or other issues that you find. Remember that this is a release candidate, and is not suitable for use on production systems, however.

Though many openSUSE users can and do use the Factory distribution and/or testing releases for day-to-day work we want to stress that it’s entirely possible that you will encounter serious bugs. See openSUSE.org/Testing[1] for more information on Testing. To follow the testing and development process, we suggest that you subscribe to the openSUSE-Factory mailing list, and join the #openSUSE-Factory channel on Freenode to discuss openSUSE development.

What’s changed since beta 5?
